Stephen feels the priests in his school lead a bland and orderly life.

    Explanation:

From Chapter 4, Section 2 Stephen is summoned by the director in his Jesuit school and he asks Stephen whether the Capuchin priestly robe should be discarded and jokingly refers to the robe as a skirt which makes Stephen feel awkward.

The director urges him to consider becoming a priest of which Stephen is excited of at first but reconsiders.
