Climate change has become one of the most severe threats to our environment. This is not an exception for Florida, where the sea level is rising at least one inch a decade. Needless to say, there are heavy rainstorms, and the temperatures are rising.
In South Florida, the land surface is continuously sinking and there is a huge risk of coastal flooding. In order to prevent it from happening, cities such as West Palm Beach, located on the coast, need to build seawalls and elevate their structure.
Moreover, climate change in Florida greatly influences its agriculture. Extremely high temperatures negatively influence the yields of sugar, peanuts, corn and other food items. On the other hand, hotter temperatures are favorable for citrus trees growth during winter.
Last but not least, high temperatures negatively affect people's health. People with health issues, the elderly, and even children have no benefit from this kind of weather. According to the estimates, there has been an increase in cardiovascular diseases in Florida due to humidity and dehydration.
In conclusion, climate change is a very serious problem in South Florida and should be addressed as such. People need to raise their awareness of this issue, so as to protect themselves and their environment from the floods and health issues that come with such climate.
