    "The Crucible" is a (1953) tragedy play by Arthur Miller. It is dramatized and fictionalized form of Salem witch trials of 1692-93.

    John Proctor has committed some sins before and during the play. At the end of the play, he is offered to save his life by confessing his guilt publicly, in written form and also incriminate and give testimony against others. Proctor refuses this and accepts to be hanged purely for his personal and religious integrity and as an act of redemption for his earlier sins. For this same reason Elizabeth refuses to run to proctor and ask for his confession. She says, "He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him!"
