So many people left Ndotsheni to go to the city because there was nothing happening in the village - there is poor soil, no job, children are dying, etc.

When people reach Johannesburg, they tend to find work. Many neglect their families in the village. Some people become their own bosses and do whatever they like.

Kumalo, the priest went to Johannesburg and saw the corruption which had affected his brother, sister and son.

In "Cry, The Beloved Country," we meet Stephen Kumalo. Kumalo is a man who lives in a town called Ndotsheni, in South Africa. He loves this town, but we learn that many people have left it in order to go to the city. People leave Ndotsheni mainly because there are no economic opportunities here. The soil is bad for farming, and there are no businesses or industries. Therefore, many people go to Johannesburg in order to look for work. However, in Johannesburg, people are often still poor. Moreover, there is no sense of community here, and many people fall into a life of sin and crime.
