    In these lines, we learn that John Proctor is a farmer in his middle thirties, who resents the hypocrites:

    "He is a sinner, a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time, but against his own vision of decent conduct."

    Although he is against hypocrisy, John himself is sinful. In the play, John is married to Elizabeth, but has an affair with Abigail.
