Many monarchs insisted they were answerable to no person. what did they base their authority on?

The monarchs that said that there was no person in the world with the right of addressing them directly based their authority on God (or the Gods their society believed in), because they had the idea that God was the one who chose them to rule, and trying to question them, was similar to questioning God itself.
