Based on the reading of "The Ramayana." Ravana is best described as the King of Lanka, an ardent worshipper of Lord Shiva and a great scholar. It is he who kidnaps Sita to take revenge from Rama and Lakhshmana who had cut off his sister Surpanakha's nose.

Ravana as per the story of "The Ramayana," was a Chackrawarthi king. The ten heads he possessed represent his knowledge of the four vedas and the six shastras. That's why he was and still known as a scholar.
