Based on this excerpt, we can conclude that the narrator is from a different part of the country than the other characters.

The other characters obviously have a distinct uneducated accent and are not very sophisticated, as opposed to the narrator who speaks good and grammatically correct English. Thus we can conclude that they are not from the same part of the country, let alone the same town.
