Because the first amendment includes the freedom of speech, religion, etc and its important because in today world we still need that to keep everyone on the same path and not let anyone be treated different because of there language or religion or anything else.

The first amendment lets us speak our opinions freely giving us the right to protest against anything that we consider to be unfair that is done by the government. It also gives us the freedom to express ourselves. For example, imagine a world where you can get aressted for saying that you don't like what Obama is doing as our president. It would take away a very large sense of freedom.
