    Just as books have chapters, plays are divided up into acts.

    Books can consist of many chapters, and plays can consist of many acts. In Shakespeare's plays, for example, there were always five acts. Then, acts can be divided into smaller parts called scenes. Each scene contains lines that characters speak.
