The speaker shows that life is tiresome and dull when he mentions "tedious argument / / of insidious intent". The very definition of the word "tedious" is dull, monotonous. It's not just a minor detail when the speaker mentions "streets that follow". You could say that streets are the path that he is following and it's tedious.
