Why do societies and individuals tend to glorify the dead?

    It is generally accepted that human society has a special regard for the remains of the dead, treating them with reverence and respect. Biological birth and death imply change, which are threatening to societies that have worldviews incorporating 'transcendental' ideals that go beyond the historical present.
