Read the excerpt from an essay about summer employment. A young person's first job is often his first encounter with reality-a crash course on how the world operates. I harken back to my time behind the counter at a hectic pool snack bar. Hungry patrons barked orders faster than I could operate the mini toaster oven, and items I pulled from the freezer seemed to melt before they reached little kids' outstretched hands. Despite the mayhem, my coworkers and I relished the camaraderie of our workplace as we labored to fill orders, stock sodas, and survive until payday. How does the author's word choice affect the tone of the excerpt? The words barked and labored impart a critical tone. The words harken and relished impart a nostalgic tone. The words hectic and mayhem impart a lively tone. The words hungry and survive impart a desperate tone.
