Dialogue can either speed up the story or slow it down, depending on what your characters are talking about. Dialogue usually reads faster than regular text, but if your characters are using longer sentences, it can slow down the pace. Dialogue effects how you interpret things in your mind. An example would be a story with no dialogue at all the story we feel long and there will be a long time until you understand what happens fully. Also a story with a lot of dialogue will probably be action packed and easy to understand what is happening.
