A claim refers to something you request when you have an specific need. Also the connotation may be conducted to something that certain person thinks he deserves.
Another meaning can go in the direction when someone is really sure of something he has a claim.

A claim is a statement that is argued, defended or supported in an essay it's usually one sentence and appears in the intro and conclusion paragraph.
