    B. All levels of society.

Explanation: However, Chaucer was a court poet, leading people to think that his intended audience was noble class only yet he was quite concerned about the contemporary issues of his society. Rather we may think of it as Chaucer was a public servant and maybe the reason that he was aware of all the happenings in the society and particularly the church. He is very critical of the church and happenings of English society and brings forth these follies via adopting quite satiric and ironical tone in 'The Canterbury tales' which is considered as his Magnum Opus, he has written so beautifully about a wide range of classes and characters, for which he is also popularly known as "character painter". In his description of various characters and tales as it gives us an insight into the cultural beliefs of the society. Like the pilgrims were on a spiritual journey yet fascinated towards the worldly pleasures.
