What was one thing that shocked you about the history of credit and consumerism

What amazes me, in the history of credit and consumerism is the good life starting to decline, jobs getting lost and the medical expenses increasing. Moreover, times were good and the jobs were plentiful and people making a lot of money but consumerism goes wild leading to debt everywhere.
