In Book VII, Raphael, who has previously visited the couple (Book V), describes for Adam, who asks him to do so, the six days of creation ("Let ther be Light, said God, and forthwith Light/Ethereal, first of things, quintessence pure/Sprung from the Deep, and from her Native East ... "). In Book XII, Michael, who has been previously sent to Paradise in order to send the couple away from it (Book XI), reveals to Adam what the future holds as a result of his sin.
