What is the tone of "The Great Gatsby"?

    It's pretty inconsistent. Cynical mostly. In the end however, the tone puts out mostly grief, sadness, an emptiness almost. Exemplifying how shallow the the wealthy culture around the main character - Nick - is, and how materialistic they are.
