"The Most Dangerous Game" is Richard Connell's story about a man called Bob Rainsford, and his unusual experience. Rainsford falls off his yacht and finds himself on a mysterious island, where he is hunted by General Zaroff.

At the beginning of the story, Rainsford has a conversation with Whitney, in which they discuss hunting. Rainsford is excited about hunting jaguars, and does not really care about the way the animal feels while being hunted. He claims that hunting is "The best sport in the world", while Whitney replies that this is only true "for the hunter," and "not for the jaguar."

Whitney is aware that jaguars are frightened, and that they can feel the pain of death. This foreshadows that Rainsford will find himself in jaguar's position - he will be General Zaroff's prey. He will be hunted, scared and will then be able to understand fear.
