"Gothic" originally referred to a Germanic tribe, the Goths. This tribe later split into the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths. The later, architectural sense is derived from the Italian word "gotico", meaning 'barbaric, rough'; referring to architecture that was the opposite of classical architecture.
