Faustus' hesitant mind does not allow him to make a decision quickly in accordance with human dubitative nature. It was believed that the forces of good and evil tormented all humans. The angels are an allegorical representation of these external forces that have great influence on the life of human individuals and their decisions. The good angel symbolizes the path of God and his laws whereas the bad angel incites a path of sin. What the ambitious doctor, who has excelled all academic disciplines, wants is to be free from these forces that lead human lives.
