It was similar to that of mother and sister because in the bus, the blacks were not allowed to sit with the whites.

Paley's mother and sister where travelling to South Medical College of Virginia to visit her brother, and in the bus the blacks would seat at the back and the whites at the front. Paley's mother and sister where seated at the back and refused to move to the front when asked by the driver to move front.

Fifteen years later she was also in a bus with a black woman who had a baby that was sleeping. She offered the woman a seat and she refused because she was scared. Later she offered to carry the sleeping child and the black woman gave her the child.

It was similar to that of mother and sister because in the bus, the blacks were not allowed to sit with the whites.
