The red badge of courage

In Chapter 9, Stephen Crane first uses "a red badge of courage" to describe a soldier's wound. Explain what a wound symbolizes to Henry. Why does he think it is so important to receive one?

    He wants to have a wound so that he can prove that he is brave.

    Explanation:

    Remember that wounds do not have to be physical - Henry has internal wounds also. He has guilt for running away.
