Hard times can affect anyone, even people who have worked hard and served their country.

    Explanation:

This song is about the struggles during the Great Depression. In the song the speaker talks about how he was promised a good life after all his hard work. The efforts of the blue collar laborers and soldiers were to build a wonderful and great nation. However, instead of doing well, he is standing in the bread line asking for a dime. He doesn't understand how all this hard work and effort could end up in the collapse of a great nation rather than its growth and prosperity.
