A reminiscence from the place of work

Explanation:

The passage is a reminiscence of the author who is looking at an alley that now is empty but that during rush hour is flooded with people. This is a description of San Francisco before rush hour; a calm just before the storm. During rush hour, people leave travel from work to home either by walking or by taking a bus, and their impatience and rush creates chaos. Seeing how the author is able to imagine this entire scene in his mind, we are led to believe that his job is directly involved with trains; probably a train driver or a brakeman.
