    The steam engine as time went on was replaced by hydraulic and electrical systems.

    The technology for driving the lift up and down was not only improved upon, there were also inventions which enhanced the safety of the Lift for use in "high rise" buildings.

    One such is the is that by Elisha Otis in 1852 which was also demonstrated in the Crystal Palace in 1854.
