During the 18th century, there was a shift of literature say that saw the gradual development of modern literature as a literary genre. Its brought about a change in literature theme and saw the rise of romanticism.

The 18th century was known as the age of enlightenment, and saw the rise of writers that explored new novel themes that spoke about reversal of status, geographical exploration, and some novels compared the natural state of modern man and the supposed civilized state of man.
