    D. Sailors wanted to quench their thirst for adventure and explore the

    unknown.

    Explanation:

    They wanted to study cultures in distant lands so they could report back to their rulers with more efficient ways of governing, however, i think sailors exploring the unknown and being adventurous was why the were able to study and explore different cultures.
