Fairness according to Oxford dictionary is defined as "impartial and just treatment or behaviour without favouritism or discrimination".

Fairness is a treatment that is just and reasonable in accordance with acceptable rules or principles. It involves giving people equal opportunity but does not guarantee equal outcome.

The concept of fairness is important because it ensures that everyone is treated justly, no partiality. It guarantees the enthronement of merit. It is about providing a level playing field which will in turn promote social justice. Fairness is about decision making rather than outcome.
