There are three types of irony

    1. Verbal irony happens when a character says one thing and its meaning is entirely different. There are many examples of verbal irony in the story. These are:

The glum faced man told Miss Fairchild "''He is taking me to Leavenworth prison. It's seven years for counterfeiting"

In above sentences, the glum faced man wants Miss Fairchild to assume that he has got a seven year sentence for counterfeiting, when actually it is the handsome young man, Mr. Easton, who is being taken to prison.

Mr. Easton told Miss Fairchild ""I had to do something."

The above sentence is an example of verbal irony since Mr. Easton did not want Miss Fairchild to understand what the 'something' truly is.

    2. Situational Irony happens when a contrast is there between what is expected and what actually happens. At the beginning of the story, when the two men enter the train, there is a mismatch between their appearances and the reality, which is revealed at the end of the story.

    3. Dramatic Irony happens when the reader perceives something that a character in the story does not know.

Miss Fairchild said""Money is not everything. But people always misunderstand things and remain ... "

In the above sentence, Miss Fairchild says that people misunderstand things, whereas she herself doesn't understand who the real prisoner is. Th readers can perceive that Mr. Easton is the prisoner; he cannot respond to her subtle request that he should woo her and to allow her and to ''live and be happy in the West,'' for he is not a free man. Her statement that 'money isn't everything' is also ironic since it is the desire for money that is responsibility for Mr. Easton's unpleasant situation.
