Read this excerpt from Anne Frank Remembered.

Quickly, we gathered up handfuls of pages in Anne's scrawling handwriting. My heart beat in fear that the Austrian would return and catch us among the now-captured "Jewish possessions." Henk had gathered up books in his arms, including the library books and Dr. Dussel's Spanish books. He was giving me a look to hurry. Van Matto was standing uncomfortably by the doorway. My arms and Elli's arms were filled with papers. Henk started down the stairs. Quickly, Van Matto hurried after him. Elli followed too, looking very young and very scared. I was the last, with the key in my hand.

Miep builds suspense in the passage by recounting their actions as they occurred.

    Explanation:

After the Franks were captured and taken out oh the building, Miep and the others who were left in the house saw some of the possessions left behind by the army. These include the diary written by Anne Frank and some of the other books they used to read. In recounting their actions and the seriousness of the act they are doing, Miep gave us, the readers, a scene full of suspense. If the Austrians return and saw them with those papers and books in their hands, they might be implicated as co-conspirators of the Nazi regime and be captured along with the Jews.
