Figurative words are used to describe the house.

    Explanation:

The house they lived in was very old with an iron fence. On the porch, they had a snake plant. They had poplar trees and ferns near the door. The house had rocking chairs where Helen slowly rocked. 'He lives for this house' is an exaggeration. It is said that smoke with creamy hot saffrons would drift from the house. the rain would make it dull. The birds were mechanical birds no better than the poor caught in canaries.
