Orpheus and Eurydice is a famed myth of ancient Greece, that tells of love, loss and the power of art. What this paper is set forth to do take a look into this myth by: summarizing it, looking a modern interptition, and viewing some of the authors' thoughts about this myth. While looking at Ovid's work you will see the overlying idea of the myth and the summery of it. Then we will go to the modern interpretation "Black Orpheus". There we will compare and contrast some of the ideas. Finally we will get to the authors views are, like what he thinks the myth is about.
The myth starts with a man that was given power by the gods; to play the most wonderful music that world had ever heard. He made such wonderful music with his lyre that even the trees and rocks were moved. Orpheus's music even over come the mighty Sirens, who where believed to have make sailors though themselves overboard when hearing there song. To finally when the sailors came to the rocky shore of the Sirens they would die. After this adventure with Jason and Argonauts is when he would find his true love Eurydice. On the day that Orpheus and Eurydice where to be wed the young bride was bitten by a snake in the grass. Orpheus's songs of grief were not only heard here on earth, but so did the gods above on mount Olympus. So Orpheus made his way though a cave to get to the under world. While there he made his way to Hades himself to plead and sing for him, so that he may have his one and only true love back. After listening to Orpheus's song Hades himself was shedding a tear. From that tear heads calls out her name "Eurydice", she then appeared with her limping foot. Orpheus was aloud to take her with him as long as while on there journey back that he must never look back to see if she was still following him. If he did look back she would once again she would be taken from him. Then on there trip out of the under world,
