Maya has been threatened by Freeman and Freeman threatens her with consequences if she ever tells anyone. Maya enjoys being and held close to Freeman but did not understand why she had been threatened by Freeman. Freeman neglects Maya for a few days and behaves badly with her once again and neglects her again for many days. Caged bird sings means that Maya wants to have a normal life full of enjoyments but she was not allowed by society to have that.
