The drop in crime rates during the last decade is a pattern that has been observed in many countries.

There are many hypotheses for this phenomenon. For example:

Lead: There has been a reduction of blood lead levels in children due to the more strict regulations regarding this material. Lead in the blood is related to the developing of learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder, making the person more propense to engage in unlawful acts. Drug Use: The reduce in the demand for cocaine could be related to the reduction in crime. People using this drug have a tendency to become more aggressive. Economic Factors: Unemployment is directly related to crime. Whenever there are low unemployment levels, crime rates tend to be low and vice-versa.
