The allusion to the country province of Warwickshire provides a visual and emotional contrast to the Brixton riot scenes. This question is about an excerpt from Midsummer by Derek Walcott:

"the child's fairy tale of an antic England-fairy rings, thatched cottages fenced with dog roses, a green gale lifting the hair of Warwickshire."

The poems were written to cover a year, from summer to summer. Walcott records the experience of a mid-life period (in reality and in memory).

Derek Walcott published this poem in 1984.
