Evaluate the sentence. "Yitgadal veyitkadash, Shmay Rabba" is repeated three times in the speech. Is Wiesel's use of this prayer as a rhetorical device effective? Why or why not?

    Remember, speech is a form of communication, for communication to occur what is being said must be understood by the listeners. However, in this case the information being passed cannot be understood by those listening.

    A rather good example of effective use of rhetorical devices can be seen from this quote by Abraham Lincoln who said rhetorically;

    "and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.

    Note that what is being mentioned in the example can be understood by listeners, although a pattern here is the omission of conjunctions in the sentence.
