    In act 1 of Shakespeare's "Hamlet," Marcellus claims that "Something is rotten in the State of Denmark" because he realizes that the appearance of the ghost is a sign of evil which will not bring anything good. In that respect, he has already been feeling that there is something wrong with the royal family: the king has been murdered and his brother has taken the throne and married the queen. As a result, the ghost represents to Marcellus political and ethical mismanagement.
