D) The vassals believe Gualtieri must be unusally discerning to have recognized Griselda's outstanding virtues.

The vassals did not see the beauty and virtue in Griselda underneath all of the rags she was wearing. Gualtieri clearly was unusually smart to see through that and marry her.
