The concept of birth and growth addressed in "Spring and All" is actually a statement about C. Brutality and impact of World War 1.

The poem was written at a very important moment in history which represented a paradigm shift for art, poetry, etc. After the end of WWI, the world was a different one, and people were looking for new ways to refer to the modern world, contemplate it and write about it.

William Carlos Williams starts the poem by describing the scene: after the winter ended, everything is covered by dead plants (end of WW1). Then, the poem changes its direction, by describing the arrival of spring, thinking about the way new life will rise from this landscape as it starts to awaken (recovery from war).
