In Jonas's world, age is determined differently from our present world. In his world, all children born the same year are considered to be Ones, no matter the period of the year they were born. Thereby, each age group celebrate their birthdays the same year every December. At age one, children are assigned a name and a family.

In this world, age is important from ages 1 - 12 years. After age 12, age isn't important and will no longer matter. Such child from that age is considered an adult and will begin a training to be assigned a job which he will do for life.

In this world, the very young and the very old are treated alike. They are taken care of by other people.

The information about Jonas's world is found in "The Giver". The novel was written in 1993 by Lois Lowry, an American author. The novel reveals the situations surrounding a 12-year-old boy known as Jonas who lives in a society of "sameness".

At a certain age he begin to feel a stirring for sexual pleasure which his mother adviced him about and said it is normal for a child of his age to experience such. She believe the feeling does not permit him to start exploring with it and she gave him a pill to take. The pill is used by people of his age and older ones.

Also it is important because at some certain age parents give gift to their children to symbolized their growth. At age seven they get a jacket, at Eight they can begin to volunteer, at nine they get bicycle and girls no longer wear hair ribbons this is to say the are getting older.

The old are treated like the old allowing them perform their duties and the children are treated as they are.
