Why do you think the communists pursued the Cultural Revolution?

Communists pursued the Cultural Revolution as a way to enforce communism by removing capitalist, traditional and cultural elements from society and impose Maoist orthodoxy. It was a failure because it favored the dictatorship of proletariat.
