I have a riddle that I can't solve: What item (physical items, not things like Wifi) is $1 for 0, $1 for 9, $2 for 99, $3 for 199, $4 for 1999, etc?

I know this about the answer so far:

Driving through a neighborhood or apartment building, you would see a lot of these.

The number of digits in the number of these items that you're buying is a dollar. For example, a 3 digit number like 199 would be $3, and a 2 digit number, like 13, would be $2.

The only thing I can think of would be the numbers on mailboxes or apartment doors (address numbers). Those are the only numbers I imagine you would be seeing on houses and things but I am not 100% sure of this answer.
