Lincoln speech was to basically unite the two dividing forces within the nation at that time. He did this by mentioning how a house divided cannot stand as a metaphor to how a country divided will not prosper and thrive. His goal as president was to not even end slavery, rather he wanted to maintain the peace between the North and South. His speech motivated the US citizens to stop acting like children and begin to see the bigger whole: which was the nation.
