Old Major uses a dream to give the animals a glimpse of what this world, free of men, could be like. In it, animals do not live short and miserable lives ever again because there are no men with them.

The source of all their problems is the human being. Some of the ways in which life would be better for the animals are the following: everyone could live in a state of equality - as they all would be just animals; they would not be forced to work long hours; no one would be slaughtered; and they would know the meaning of happiness and leisure - which they did not know after they were one year old, as Old Major says in the text.
