The Greeks believed in many gods because to them the idea of one God was impossible and they also thought that those Gods either brought them blessings or hurt. They also believed that those Gods lived independent lives and could interfere in human affairs. The passage mentions the death and Hades was god of death. They also mention the Greek god Apollo who was considered a God of beauty and archery as well as hunting; he was sometimes mentioned in war, etc.
