The short story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell is influenced by the big-game safari tours in Africa and South America in the 1920s. In the beginning of the story, the world famous hunter Rainsford and his companions are discussing about hunting the jaguar in the Amazon river basin in Brazil before he falls into the waters of the caribbean.

General Zaroff describes a big-game hunting spree in Africa where he was attacked by a charging Cape Buffalo. His character is based on wealthy Americans who have a passion for hunting wild game. General Zaroff describes himself as being born for the hunt. He has tired of hunting wild game and now he loves to hunt human beings as they can reason which no other animal can. For him, it adds to the thrill of the hunt and justifies the murder of human beings.

The world famous hunter Rainsford goes from being the hunter to being the hunted. His character expresses what the wild animals are going through while they are being hunted. Due to his finesse in the hunting game, he overcomes all challenges set for him by General Zaroff and emerges victorious after killing the general.
