Hannah Senesh was a Hungarian Jewish poet, writing both in Hungarian and Hebrew. Senesh embraced Zionism and joined Maccabea, a Hungarian Zionist students organization.

In 1944, Senesh tried to assist in the rescue of Hungarian Jews about to be deported to the German death camp at Auschwitz. She was arrested, then imprisoned and tortured, but refused to reveal details of her mission. Hannah Senesh was eventually tried and executed by firing squad. She is regarded as a national heroine and martyr in Israel.
