Gangs is one of the central ideas of the play DNA. The close knit nature of the group in the opening sentence of the play DNA bears strongest influence on the audience. Gangs may also develop unity when faced with the danger of getting caught by police, this unique development of unity among gang members we get to know when Adam dies.

Bullying is another central idea of the play DNA. Physical abuse and psychological bullying of Adam is seen in the book DNA. Jan and Mark recount with relish what they did to Adam when they believed he died falling through the grille. John Tate, who bullies mercilessly to keep power, disappears from the action early but is referenced as having 'lost it' and 'found God' as the play progresses. There are clearly consequences for their actions.

Responsibility is the third central idea of the play DNA. The play asks this question of ultimate responsibility for the callous behaviour of the gang and a surprise savage behaviour Adam. The gang takes collective responsibility of the death of Adam in the play to save themselves from the action of police.
